Winter Weather Notification Information

Posted Date: 1/07/25 (7:29 PM)

Wildcat Families,
Winter temperatures have found their way to Carnegie! While we currently have made no changes to our regular school schedule this week, we are monitoring forecasts for winter weather headed our way on Thursday, and felt this would be a good time to remind everyone of the process our team utilizes in making weather related decisions and where this important information can be found in the event of inclement weather in our community.
While we feel strongly that our students are best served academically and socially by being in school, our first priority remains with the safety of our students and their families. We fully understand that last minute schedule changes greatly impact our Wildcat Families, and will do our best to communicate any needed changes as quickly as possible.
HOW WILL THE DECISION BE MADE?
During the time leading up to the announcement of changes to the school schedule, we will consult  with our school transportation director and appropriate local emergency management departments to monitor road conditions and any additional information that might impact travel to school. We will also speak with surrounding schools to monitor what decisions they are making based on the information that they have collected concerning the need for schedule changes.
HOW IS PUBLIC NOTIFIED?
Communication with our families will be made as quickly as the decision is made to cancel or modify the daily school schedule. Information will be posted on our Carnegie Schools Facebook Page and in our school's Parent-Square App. Closures or delays will also be communicated through local news channels 4, 5, and 9.
WILL SCHOOL CLOSE IF WEATHER OCCURS DURING THE SCHOOL DAY?
Once we make the decision to open the school, many parents rely on the decision and leave for work. If we then send students back home, many will return to unsupervised bus stops and empty houses. If conditions get worse during the school day, we may be forced to consider an early dismissal. If that is the case, we will make every attempt to notify all parents as quickly as possible to ensure all students needs are met, this will include posting information and updates on the Carnegie Schools Facebook page as well as through our Parent-Square App.
Although we will do our very best, we know that no perfect decision exists. Circumstances may be different among our Wildcat Families, so we ask that if you do not feel as though it is safe for your child to attend school due to weather related conditions, that you use your best judgment to decide whether or not your child(ren) should stay at home or come to school.
We hope this answers many of your questions concerning inclement weather decisions. If you have additional concerns, please feel free to let us know. Thank you for your flexibility and understanding.
Mr. Randy Turney, Superintendent
